30 years of the Single European Market

GeneralNoticesInternational activities

This year, the single market is celebrating 30 years of its existence, and in addition to European institutions, European organizations for standardization (CEN and CENELEC) are joining this jubilee. For the European Union, this is also a significant year considering that the removal of administrative barriers means the facilitation of trade through the reduction of bureaucracy, while the application of EN standards contributes to the good functioning of the European market.

Since its creation in 1993, the Single Market has proven to be one of the EU's greatest achievements: by facilitating trade, cutting red tape, and ensuring the same levels of safety and quality across the block, it has helped make everyday life easier, boosting jobs across Europe.

During these years, European standards have played a decisive role thanks to a unified standardization system based on consensus and inclusion, standards build confidence in the Single Market: they ensure that products sold in Europe meet the highest level of quality and safety for consumers, and in the case of harmonized standards (hENs), help users comply with European legislation. Also, as one of the main components of the so-called "Brussels effect", they helped strengthen the position of European business on the global market.

This anniversary is an opportunity not only to celebrate the achieved results but also to prepare for future challenges. To successfully tackle today's challenges and ensure that it can remain competitive in the long term, Europe needs a strong, resilient, and modern Single Market.

The European Organizations for Standardization, CEN and CENELEC, by adopting the European standardization development strategy, identified the most important tasks and confirmed their orientation towards achieving common goals. They bring together a large number of experts from all over Europe who are committed to creating conditions for the development of all economic sectors, with the inclusion of all European countries.

This very year, the jubilee year of the existence of the common market, the Institute for Standardization of Serbia will host the general assemblies of CEN and CENELEC.

The Accreditation Body of Serbia congratulates the Institute for Standardization on the upcoming four-day meeting held in Belgrade, at which guidelines for the further development of European standardization will be determined.
